Lisbon hosted the 2025 edition of the International HPC Summer School

Over 120 participants from around the world gathered in Lisbon for an intensive week of training in HPC, AI, and Big Data.

The 2025 International HPC Summer School (IHPCSS) took place in Lisbon from 6 to 11 July, bringing together more than 120 postgraduate students, researchers and experts from Europe, North America, Japan, and Australia. The FCCN, the digital services unit of FCT, played a key role as host institution, contributing to the successful local delivery of the event.

IHPCSS is one of the world’s leading advanced training programmes in high performance computing (HPC), artificial intelligence and Big Data. The programme combined theoretical and hands-on sessions on topics such as MPI and OpenMP programming, CPU and GPU performance optimisation, deep learning with TensorFlow, large-scale data analysis and scientific visualisation.

Throughout the week, participants worked in multidisciplinary teams and received guidance from internationally recognised mentors, encouraging cross-disciplinary and cross-border collaboration.

Hosting the event in Lisbon reinforces Portugal’s growing recognition in the international scientific computing landscape, supported by investments such as the Deucalion supercomputer and national strategies led by FCT and CNCA.
