Advanced Computing in Focus at FCCN 2024 Annual Conference

Advanced computing stands out at FCCN 2024, with sessions on AI, HPC, and quantum simulation.

From May 6 to 8, the FCCN Annual Conference will bring together Portugal’s academic, scientific, and technological communities at the Convento de São Francisco in Coimbra. Promoted by FCCN — the digital services unit of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) — this yearly meeting is a key opportunity for knowledge sharing and collaboration across areas such as Connectivity, Computing, Collaboration, Knowledge, and Security.

This year’s edition places a strong focus on Advanced Computing, with sessions co-organised by FCT|FCCN and EuroCC Portugal, featuring national and international speakers discussing cutting-edge topics at the intersection of High Performance Computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Quantum Technologies.

On May 6, the session “Advanced Computing and AI Factories: Portugal in the European AI Strategy” (14:30, Sala Sofia) will explore the European AI Factories initiative, highlighting Portugal’s role within this ecosystem. Speakers include João Nuno Ferreira (FCT|FCCN), Jordi Planas (Barcelona Supercomputing Center), and Irina Moreira (University of Coimbra / PURR.AI).

On May 8, at 11:00 in Sala Sofia, the “AI & Quantum” DemoLab will feature live demonstrations on the Deucalion supercomputer, showcasing use cases such as AlphaFold3 for biomedical modelling, LLMs optimized for HPC, and quantum simulation integrated with supercomputing environments, presented by experts from INESC TEC and CNCA.

These sessions underscore Portugal’s growing role in the European advanced computing landscape and support EuroCC2’s mission to foster skills, research, and innovation in the field.
