EuroCC Webinar presents “amália” – A Multimodal LLM for European Portuguese

Discover amália – the national large language model for European Portuguese – in the next EuroCC webinar on AI and multimodality.

On November 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM CEST (9:00 AM PT), the webinar “amália: Towards a Multimodal LLM for European Portuguese” will present one of Portugal’s most ambitious national AI initiatives.

The session will be led by Prof. João Magalhães, Professor at NOVA University Lisbon and Co-Director of the CMU Portugal Program, and will explore the development of amália, a large multimodal language model (LLM) designed to integrate text, speech, image, and video — with applications in public services, science, and industry.

Developed using HPC infrastructures such as Deucalion and MareNostrum 5, amália combines advanced training and alignment techniques (DPO, GRPO with Verifiable Rewards) to create a model that is culturally aligned, trustworthy, and linguistically accurate.

The talk will cover:

  • Training and architecture of the amália LLM
  • Applications in multimodal AI (text, audio, image, video)
  • Cultural and linguistic alignment strategies
  • Governance and transparency in LLMs
  • Future roadmap and collaboration opportunities

This event is part of the LLM Webinar Series by NCC Slovakia, in cooperation with NCC Portugal, connecting HPC, AI, and cultural innovation under the EuroCC initiative.
